When Rights Go Wrong: Intellectual Property Law for the Social Media -- This month we've got a very interesting speaker, Jeff Young, who practices entertainment and media law. Jeff will be touching on the topics of trademarks, rights of privacy, and cybersquatting.
Jeff received his Bachelor of Law degree from UBC, where he also studied Commerce, before beginning his 18 year legal career which started in corporate and real estate law and ultimately focused on intellectual property and entertainment, particularly in film/TV and music. Jeff currently teaches Film Law and New Media Law in the School of Business / New Media Dept. at BCIT. Jeff is also a music composer, producer and supervisor with credits on numerous recordings including projects delivered to Warner, Universal, CBC, CTV, NBC, Global and the Knowledge Network.

“ Was very fixed on internet issues, rights of use. Was hoping for a bit more from social policy perspective - for the social good. But that's not the domain of law employed, and it was in keeping with the description of the meetup as advertised. Was a very good primer on the topic of complexity of the specifics regarding of tort law regarding rights, use of, and the complexity of defamation, privacy and publicity rights, and how they are easily and readily confused and confusable, of which many issues (jurisidicional, domicile) pertain to that. Mr. Jeff Young as a speaker, practicing lawyer, instructor, is excellent - knows his craft, commands the knowledge with ease, can address the audience and respond to the interruption/questio
n with ease. Addressed the basics and in that fashion was what would be necessary as a step to understand the complex environment of that legal domain. ”
